Introduction to Finance - We start by discussing the goal of the firm. We then introduce the financial statements: balance sheets, income statements, and cash flows statements and discuss their uses and limitations. We then turn to a discussion of valuation. What are the drivers of value? This will require an understanding of cash flows and required rates of return. We will introduce concepts such as free cash flow and weighted average cost of capital. We finish the day valuing a high-tech start-up that eventually failed and ask how a company worth several billions in December can declare bankruptcy 8 months later.

Funding and Capital Structure

Henri Servaes

Richard Brealey Professor of Corporate Governance; Professor of Finance

How should we finance our business? What are the benefits of debt financing, and how do we exploit them without getting into trouble? These are the questions we start the day with. We then revisit the high-tech start-up case discussed on day 1 and ask whether the company used the right form of financing and if not, why not. Next, we discuss how companies should think about dividends and share buybacks. Finally, we study mergers & acquisitions and ask why so many acquisitions fail. In a case study, we will explore how a firm should respond to a proposed acquisition. Under what circumstances is it right to fight an offer? In the context of the case, we will also discuss optimal bid tactics.
